Special beer brewed for The Big Tap In
Phill Reda wanted to do something special for the third annual The Big Tap In beer festival in Youngstown. So Reda, who organizes the tasting and owns Vintage Estate Wine and Beer in Boardman, collaborated with Cellar Rats Brewery to make an exclusive beer for the event.Bitchin’ Bourbon Barrel Ale is a 9 percent ale made with Ohio maple syrup, vanilla beans and Belgian yeast. “That’s what brewing is all about: Experimentation,” Reda, a homebrewer for more than 15 years, said about the ingredients. The name is the result of several unforeseen challenges and much swearing done while making the beer, he added, laughing.
The maple syrup used is from Misty Maple Sugar House, a small award-winning operation in Salem. “It was really important to me to utilize Ohio maple syrup,” Reda said. “It’s perfect for what we’re trying to achieve at the event.”
The Big Tap In will highlight Ohio breweries and there will be an Ohio flag hanging over the Ohio beer section. The festival will feature more than 280 different beers. A full list will soon be uploaded onto The Big Tap In website. The event is April 21 at the Covelli Centre. The VIP session – which is sold out – starts at 1 p.m. The general admission session runs from 3 to 6 p.m. Tickets are $45. For more details or to get tickets, click here.
Vintage Estate is planning a big promotional party March 24, with VIP ticket giveaways and other prizes. The bar and beer and wine store also will hold special events the week leading up to The Big Tap In. Bitchin’ Bourbon Barrel Ale also will be available on draft after the event at Vintage Estate.
