Market Garden Brewery in Cleveland planned to give away a free beer to anyone who donates a new, unwrapped toy Thursday (Dec. 5) at the brewery to the Toys for Tots program.
But hold on. State law bars liquor permit holders from giving away free booze.
"You can never give away alcohol," Ohio Division of Liquor Control spokesman Matt Mullins said Tuesday.
The state will look into the promotion, which runs from 4 to 10 p.m. The goal isn't to interfere with collecting toys for charity but to make sure the brewery stays in compliance with the law, Mullins said.
Alerted to the state's interest, Market Garden brewmaster Andy Tveekrem said the brewery will figure something out to keep the charitable effort going.
