Stevens Point Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale took home the top prize at the recent Blind Pumpkin Beer Taste at Vintage Estate Wine and Beer in Boardman. Weyenbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale and O'Fallon Pumpkin Beer finished second and third, respectively.
The annual event involves beer drinkers gathering to taste, discuss and score various pumpkin ales -- all without knowing the brand they are tasting.
"This day is a clear reflection of what we live for -- craft beer lovers having a great time, interacting with each other without any distractions, and growing their appreciation for something that’s very important to us," owners Phill and Sandy Reda said in a prepared statement.
Vintage Estate also announced it will host its fourth annual Blind Christmas Ale Taste at 4 p.m. Dec. 8. Several Christmas ales will be judged the same way as the pumpkin beers during a blind taste. Tickets will go on sale in mid-November.
Both annual tastes generally sell out within a week. Vintage Estate celebrated its five-year anniversary this month. The business offers more than 1,100 wine and beer labels for carry-out or on-site consumption. It also features 28 craft beers on tap and a specialized flatbread menu.
