Tony Packo's celebrates with a beer

By Rick Armon Published: April 3, 2012

Tony Packo's, the venerable Toledo institution, will celebrate its 80th anniversary this year with an exclusive beer made by Great Black Swamp Brewing Co.

Tony Packo's 80th Anniversary Ale -- a rye pale ale -- will be available on draft starting Wednesday at Packo's at the Park, the original Front Street location and the Sylvania restaurant. The beer also will be sold in 22-ounce bottles starting Friday at the restaurants.

Great Black Swamp co-owner and brewer Paul Traver described the beer this way: "It is light in body with a golden color, mildly hoppy with a crisp finish, with a little spiciness to complement the famous Tony Packo’s food."

"The entire process of working with Packo's has been very exciting," Traver added. It's also exciting, he said, because it's the Toledo production brewery's first venture into bottling, which they are doing by hand.

Tony Packo's became famous worldwide when Corporal Max Klinger, a character on the television show M*A*S*H and Toledo native, referred to Tony Packo's as having the "greatest Hungarian hot dogs." The restaurant also has a collection of buns autographed by celebrities -- a tradition that started in 1972 with Burt Reynolds.
