West Point announces homebrew winners
West Point Market in Akron has named the top 10 finalists – well, top 11 because there was a tie for the last beer -- in its Bottle My Brew Homebrew Challenge. The winning beer – which will be brewed by Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. in Akron and be available at West Point and select Winking Lizard Taverns – will be announced Oct. 26 at a special beer tasting event at the grocery store.
The finalists are:
-- Rob Slater of Medina: German wheat and rye.
-- Michael Crea of Akron: India pale ale.
-- John Hull of Dublin: Chocolate beer and cilantro jalapeno India pale ale (Yes, he had two beers place in the top 10 ... err ... top 11).
-- Greg Irving of Strongsville: India pale ale.
-- Keith Kneisley of Akron: imperial American amber.
-- Jeff Berghoff of Stow: rye saison.
-- Ryan Crabtree of Wooster: pumpkin ale.
-- Nathan Levengood of Dover: porter.
-- Terry Reagan of Akron: stout
-- Nick Herstich of Akron: strong ale.
Overall, there were 138 entries.
The finalists now will be judged again to determine an overall winner. The first-place winner will receive $1,000, a trophy and have his beer brewed and bottled by Thirsty Dog. The second-place winner will receive $500. West Point has promised cash prizes for the top 10, so it's unclear if there will be a cash prize for 11th place.
