West Point plans beer tasting

By Rick Armon Published: October 22, 2012

westpointlogoWest Point Market in Akron will hold a beer tasting Friday and announce the winner of its statewide “Bottle My Brew” challenge. The tasting is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. at the grocery, 1711 W. Market St. It includes food, jazz by the Josh Rzepka Trio and prizes for the best Halloween costume.

There will be 50 beers available from breweries such as Weasel Boy, Willoughby, Rivertown, Thirsty Dog, Hoppin’ Frog, Great Lakes, Cellar Rats, Elevator, Oskar Blues and Samuel Adams. Oskar Blues brewmaster Dave Chichura is scheduled to make an appearance and chat with beer drinkers.

The new Crafted Artisan Meadery from Portage County also will be serving its meads.

The highlight for many homebrewers will be the results of the Bottle My Brew competition. West Point asked homebrewers to submit homemade beers in the challenge, which was open to all Ohio residents and includes $2,500 worth of prizes.

West Point previously announced the 11 finalists — there was a tie for 10th place — and on Friday the winner will be revealed. (I was one of the judges and will post the results here Friday night.)

The winning beer will be brewed by Thirsty Dog Brewing in Akron and be available at West Point and select Winking Lizard Taverns.

Tickets are $30 and reservations are required. For more details or reservations, call 330-864-2151, ext. 129.
