Willoughby Brewing Co. director of brewing operations and beer Cicerone Rick Seibt, and award-winning homebrewer and certified beer judge Paul Shick are teaming up to put on a "Beer Sensory Evaluation Class" at the brewpub in Willoughby. The class -- from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 17 -- will focus on detecting problems in beer. "Style guidelines help the brewer understand what the resulting beer style should look, taste and smell like," Seibt said in an email. "But it's sensory evaluation that allows him or her to assess whether the resulting beer achieved those profiles and also whether unwanted flavors resulting from the brewing and fermentation techniques can be found." He recommends that beer bloggers, in particular, hone that skill. "They have a passion for great beer, and this class will help them identify potentially problematic beers, expand their brewing knowledge and increase their ability to assess beers," he added. The cost is $20 and the class size is limited to 50 people. For more details or to sign up, click here.
