Yellow Springs Brewery is expanding and will start canning this year.
The brewery hopes to install a 15-barrel brewhouse and 30-barrel fermenters in late April or May, and purchase a canning line shortly after that.
"We were looking for the right bank to get us in debt more," co-owner Nate Cornett said Tuesday with a laugh. "We finally found that ... We're putting on our big boy pants."
The brewery, which opened in Yellow Springs in 2013, has been operating with a seven-barrel system and seven-barrel fermenters. Yellow Springs produced about 700 barrels last year. The new system will allow the brewery to pump out as many as 5,000.
"We're going as big as we can in our space," Cornett said.
The expansion will permit the brewery to become more visible in the Dayton and Columbus markets, Cornett said. "We want to be in Columbus a lot more and get into Cincinnati, too," he said.
He hopes to be canning "as soon as possible." Yellow Springs plans on releasing 12-ounce cans in six-packs, as opposed to nearby Warped Wing Brewing Co., which offers 16-ounce cans in four-packs.
Cornett expects two or three of Yellow Springs brands to be canned. Which ones? Captain Stardust, the brewery's popular saison, is one of them. He's not sure about the others right now, although he mentioned the possibility of a pale ale or IPA.
In other Yellow Springs news, Cornett said the brewery will collaborate with Jackie O's Brewery in Athens this year for a special beer for Ohio Brew Week. The details are still being worked out, he added.
