4-15-09 Morning Roundup
If it's not one thing, it's another with these Indians. After getting a better performance from starter Carl Pavano, who allowed four runs in six innings, the bullpen couldn't come through.
Rafael Perez allowed a run before loading the bases in the eighth inning. With just one out, Perez was removed for Vinnie Chulk, who promptly allowed John Buck's second grand slam of his career. It was also his second home run of the game.
Aaron Laffey will have his chance to pitch Wednesday in the afternoon series finale. in order to make room on the roster for Laffey, Josh Barfield was sent down to Triple A Columbus.
Barfield's only playing time so far this season was pinch running Tuesday night. He was caught stealing in the eighth inning.
The rest...
Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli took a break from his draft preparations to meet with the Indians Tuesday. Pioli, a close friend of Indians general manager Mark Shapiro had some pretty sound advice for the Indians, helping keep the losing streak in perspective, according to MLB.com.
One game in the NFL's 16-game regular season roughly equates to 10 in MLB's 162-game season.. "Scott said, 'If you're me, you haven't even played one full game yet,'" Wedge said.
Columbus update
Clippers utility man/catcher/ jack of all trades starter Chris Gimenez, who caught Tuesday, was busted open when he was hit in the head by a the backswing of Indianapolis' Robinzon Diaz.
The Clippers lost 13-6 to the Indians, the Triple A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Gimenez is listed as day-to-day.
Looking ahead
The Indians will help open the New Yankee Stadium Thursday, which looks to be a circus-like atmosphere. The Indians are already looking forward to it.
The Yankee fans?
They just want AJ Burnett to beat Carl Pavano Sunday. Well at least Peter Abraham does:
Yes, A.J. Burnett starts tonight against the Rays. But that’s not what we’re talking about.
He is scheduled to face Carl Pavano at the Stadium on Sunday.
Yes, that Carl Pavano. The American Idle. The Rajah of Rehab. The bandit who made away with $39.95 million dollars of Yankee money in return for 27 starts over four years. That Carl Pavano.
The pride of region rests on your shoulders, A.J. If the Idle comes back to the Bronx and beats the Yankees it’ll be a shame that could ruin the rest of the season.
