Acta likes numbers, but they have limits

CLEVELAND: Manny Acta doesn't hesitate to look at all the statistics he can get his hands on, but that doesn't mean the Indians manager blindly makes in-game moves strictly by the numbers.

He is particularly interested in batter/pitcher matchuips, but even they have their limitations.

""Those are the only statistics I take to the dugout,'' Acta said. ""I look at lifetime matchups between individuals, and I look at the matchups for the last three years. I don't really care about the last 10.''

Acta has a reputation for keeping up with the latest in estoric statistics, but he doesn't give credence to all of them.

""I don't like to be pigeonholed as a stat guy,'' he said.
On the other hand, Acta is much more numbers conscious than when he began managing in the minors in 1993.

""When I started out in (Class A) Auburn, I didn't know any better. I started to look at more stats in 2004. And I'm a different manager now.''
