Aeros' Edell wins EL weekly honors
Left-handedpitcher Ryan Edell was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Monday.
It is the fourth weekly award for an Aeros player this season as right-handed pitcher Jeanmar Gomez and outfielder Nick Weglarz (twice) have also claimed the honor this season.
Edell was dominating in his two starts - both wins - this week.
First, he shutout Erie for seven innings July 27th. Then he tossed six scoreless frames against Binghamton Saturday.
Edell is now 4-1 and ranks second in the EL with both a 2.32 ERA and 1.13 WHIP, while ranking third with 91 strikeouts.
In his first start, Edell limited Erie to just four hits on a season-high seven innings while striking out seven batters in the Aeros 9-0 win.
Against the B-Mets, Edell scattered five hits over six shutout innings while striking out four in an 8-4 victory.
On the week, Edell went 2-0 without allowing a run in 13 innings of work. He gave up just nine hits and three walks while recording 11 strikeouts. Opponets batted just .196 against him.
The Aeros return to Canal Park Tuesday for a 7:05 p.m. game for the opener of a three-game series with the Connecticut Defenders, the first-place team in the Northern Division.
originally, Akron was scheduled to send newcomer Connor Graham (0-0, 2.70 ERA) to the mound against Connecticut’s Geivy Garcia (0-3, 5.65 ERA).
But it now appears that Indians right-hander Jake Westbrook will start the game on a rehab assignment on his way back from Tommy John surgery.
Graham will likely follow Westbrook, who is slated to throw three innings or 50 pitches - whichever comes first.
