Ambriz will undergo elbow surgery
CLEVELAND: It took several months, but Hector Ambriz finally found out why his right arm didn't feel quite right.
Ambriz will undergo elbow reconstruction surgery on his ulnar collateral ligament on Friday. The operation will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Anaheim, Calif., near Ambriz's home. The usual recovery time from Tommy John surgery is 12-18 months, so Ambriz is unlikely to pitch next year.
""I think it bothered him back in spring training,'' manager Manny Acta said this afternoon. ""It was pretty much the same injury. He told me it just never felt right the whole year.''
Ambriz was a Rule 5 acquisition from the Diamondbacks last December, which meant the Tribe had to keep him on its roster the whole season or offer him back to Arizona. In 34 relief outings, Ambriz posted an 0-2 record and 5.59 earned-run average in 48 1/3 innings.
Because of today's makeup doubleheader, the Indians find themselves without a starter for Sunday's season finale in Chicago. Look for the manager to use a combination of relievers.
