Asdrubal Cabrera, Chris Perez Tribe All-Star representatives
CINCINNATI: Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and closer Chris Perez will represent the Indians in the All-Star Game July 12 at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Cabrera has had a breakout season at the plate, hitting .294 and leading the team with 14 home runs and 49 RBI. He also is the club leader in doubles with 21 and runs scored with 53.
""The only thing I didn't expect from Asdrubal was the power numbers,'' manager Manny Acta said. ""He batted .300 before I came here, so I didn't expect any less. But I'd be lying if I told you I expected these power numbers. I thought he would be a double digit guy (in home runs) but not double digits in the first half of the season.''
Perez leads has saved 19 games in 20 opportunities and his last 13 in a row. He is 10 for 11 in one-run save chances with an overall earned-run average of 2.37 and batting average against of .206.
""Those one-run saves are impressive,'' Acta said. ""Those are legitimate saves. And they didn't come with him facing the bottom of the order, either.''
Cabrera, 25, and Perez, who turned 26 on Friday, are first-time All-Stars. The last Cleveland closer chosen for the All-Star Game was Bob Wickman in 2005. Omar Vizquel was the last Tribe shortstop picked, in 2002. The last time the club had more than two players selected to play in the All-Star Game was 2007 (Grady Sizemore, C.C. Sabathia, Victor Martinez).
