Brantley sent down, Branyan to rejoin Tribe

The Indians optioned struggling outfielder Michael Brantley to Triple-A Columbus Monday after the rookie hit .156 (5-for-32) with a double, three RBI and four runs scored in nine games to start the season.

The Indians would have likely stuck with Brantley if it weren't for them needing a roster spot to activate veteran first baseman Russell Branyan from the disabled list prior to Tuesday's game in Minnesota.

Branyan, who signed with the Indians as a free agent Feb. 24th, was placed on the disabled list on April 3. He appeared in six games on a rehab assignment at Columbus and Double-A Akron, combining to bat .273 (6-for-22) with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.
