Canzler stars in intrasquad game
GOODYEAR, Ariz.: Russ Canzler came as advertised, as he hit a grand slam and a single, driving in five runs during today's five-inning intrasquad game that ended in a 5-5 tie.
The Indians acquired Canzler, 25, from Tampa Bay at the end of January for cash. He was touted as a hitter, and he made good on that promise today.
Last year at Triple-A Durham, he batted .314 with 18 homers and 83 RBI in 474 at-bats.
His problem area: defense. Manager Manny Acta said that Canzler would concentrate his efforts on playing first base in spring training but will play sparingly in left field. Canzler's lack of a position will make it difficult for him to make the roster, especially in light of the fact that he has options.
Felix Pie also homered with nobody on base, and Nick Weglarz doubled twice.
Each of 10 pitchers threw one inning, with Derek Lowe, Chris Ray, Zach McAllister and Corey Kluber retiring the side in order.
