Carrasco virtually certain September call-up; Masterson seems headed for pen
DETROIT: Manager Manny Acta has been incrementally revealing his plans for the Indians' rotation in September. Today he gave a few more clues.
He intends to have some form of a six-man rotation, which would enable him to look at Carlos Carrasco, who is 10-5 with a 3.71 earned-run average at Columbus.
""Justin Masterson will probably meet his innings requirements by the second week of September,'' Acta said this morning. ""We want to limit him to about 180 innings, but he doesn't have to get every single one of them. If we bring up a starter, Masterson could finish his innings out of the bullpen.''
Masterson has thrown 145 1/3 innings so far and will get three more starts before the second week of September, which probably will bring his total number of innings close to 165.
David Huff presumably might be a candidate for September promotion, but Tribe officials, including Acta, are not high on him. when asked about Huff, the manager said, ""Yes, he's down there, too.''
Acta said three relievers might be summoned from Triple-A (possibly Josh Judy, Jensen Lewis and Bryce Stowell), as well as outfielder Jordan Brown.
