With an influx of young catchers in the farm system thanks in part to a bevy of late-season trades last year, the Indians capped a long day of internal movement Tuesday by trading catcher Kelly Shoppach to the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named.
Shoppach struggled last season in his first real opportunity to play everyday for the Tribe. He hit just .214 with 14 doubles, 12 home runs and 40 RBI and had more strikeouts (98) than games played (89).
The 29-year old spent a majority of his four seasons with the Tribe as the back-up to veteran Victor Martinez, who ironically was traded to Boston last season - the same club from whom the Indians acquired Shoppach in 2006.
The Indians have until Dec. 20 to chose the player they're seeking in return for Shoppach.
