Tribe releases Perez, completes trade with Padres

Chris Perez's days as the Indians' closer are over.

The Tribe released Perez this afternoon rather than deal with him as an arbitration-elegible player in line to make at leat $9 million next in 2014.

Bourn undergoes minor hamstring surgery

Center fielder Michael Bourn underwent surgery to his left hamstring today in Dallas and is expected to resume his normal offseason training program in four-six weeks, after completing rehab that will begin this week at his home in Houston. 

The injury occurrred in the final game of the regular season, when Bourn tried to steal second base in the ninth inning of the 5-1 win at Minnesota.

Indians' Michael Bourn out 4-6 week after hamstring repair

The Indians today announced this afternoon that center fielder Michael Bourn underwent minor surgery on his left hamstring today in Dallas, , a procedure performed by Dr. Dan Cooper.

 Bourn suffered the injury on a second base steal attempt in the ninth inning of the final game of the regular season in Cleveland’s American League Wild Card-clinching 5-1 win at Minnesota on Sept. 29th.

CLEVELAND: Jason Giambi will turn 43 over the winter, but he doesn’t sound like someone headed for the retirement home anytime soon. Giambi made it clear after the Indians’ 4-0 wild-card loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday he’d like to play again next year.

Given the way Tribe manager Terry Francona has raved about Giambi’s leadership throughout the season, there seems a decent chance Giambi could return next season.

CLEVELAND: The Indians’ two biggest free agent acquisitions were two of the biggest disappointments in Wednesday’s 4-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League wild card game.

Michael Bourn and Nick Swisher, who made a combined $18 million this season to revive a sinking franchise, went a combined 0 for 8 Wednesday with four strikeouts. Every time the bottom of the order reached base, Bourn and Swisher – the top two hitters in the order – killed the rallies.

Rays' starter Alex Cobb impressive after concussion layoff

Rays’ right-hander Alex Cobb (11-3, 2.76) will make his post-season debut against the Indians tonight. The 25-year-old endured probably the toughest year of his career, missing two months with a concussion.

On June 15 against Kansas City, Cobb was hit by a line drive off the bat of Eric Hosmer. He was struck near his right ear and carried off the field on a stretcher.
