Choo to lead off in both games against Twins
MINNEAPOLIS: With Johnny Damon struggling at the plate and manager Manny Acta looking for someone to get on base, Shin-Soo Choo will be the leadoff batter for tonight's game against the Twins.
“”Right now we need someone to get on base, and his game is getting on base,’’ Acta said. “”Johnny is scuffling right now. We’re going to do this tomorrow, too.’’
Choo said he hit in the leadoff spot part of his final year (2006) in Triple-A with the Mariners, and he recalled hitting first when he returned from an injury last year.
“”I’ve done it before,’’ he said. “”I don’t change anything if I bat first.’’
Right-handed batters Shelley Duncan and Jose Lopez replaced left-handed batters Jack Hannahan and Damon, even though the Twins’ starter was right-hander Carl Pavano.
“”Carl has struggled against right-handers so far this year,’’ Acta explained.
Hannahan was dealing with tightness in his back, sustained Sunday, another reason why he was given the night off.
