Fan falls from mezzanine level trying to catch foul ball
ARLINGTON, Texas: With the Rangers batting in the fifth inning, a fan sitting in the mezzanine level of The Ballpark in Arlington fell into the lower deck.
Two witnesses said the man stood to catch a foul ball, turning his back to the field. As he did so, he lost his balance and fell over the protective railing. He tried to grab another railing that fronts a level of suites about 12 below and continued his fall into the lower deck seats. Apparently, he did not land on other fans.
Rangers public relations chief John Blake said the man fell about 30 feet into the lower seating bowl, and that after paramedics arrived on the scene, the victim was able to move all of his extremities and was responsive to their questions. The man was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
According to Blake, four fans in the lower deck also were hurt and were treated at the scene.
Nelson Cruz hit the foul ball off a pitch by Indians starter Justin Masterson. The game was interrupted for 16 minutes while the man was being administered to.
