Four more players coming from Columbus
DETROIT: Four more players will be summoned from Columbus Tuesday: outfielder Vinny Rottino, second baseman Cord Phelps, left-handed reliever Scott Maine and veteran lefty starter David Huff.
Phelps is batting .276 with 16 home runs, 82 runs and 62 RBI; Rottino is batting .297 for the season (most of it in the Mets’ system) with nine homers and 66 RBI and .291 with the Clippers; Huff was 7-6 with a 4.94 ERA, and Maine, claimed on waivers last week from the Cubs, appeared in only two games for Columbus, pitching two scoreless innings. In three stints with Chicago, he posted a 1-1 record and 4.79 ERA.
“”For us, this is a good time to evaluate players,’’ manager Manny Acta said. “”We have a lot of meaningful games left against teams still going for the playoffs, which means they are not going to play guys they just called up. Plus, nobody wants to finish last, so we want to win games.’’
