What’s most impressive about Carlos Santana’s debut thus far? How about his keen batter’s eye: Santana has walked six times in 30 plate appearances, which means he has been walked 20 percent of the time.
He is making the pitcher’s work to do it. Twice in yesterday’s game he worked back from a 1-2 count before being walked. For the season (seven games) he is seeing making pitchers throw more than four pitches an at bat to him. His on base percentage currently sits at .467.
Triple-A Columbus (41-28) – A second-inning, two-run home run by Jared Goedert was all the runs the Clippers would need to hold off Pawtucket 2-1. Matt LaPorta finished 2-4 with a double. Since arriving in Columbus he is 15-40 with five home runs, 10 RBI. Michael Brantley has not played since Tuesday, but was hitting .375 over his last 10 games (15-40). The powerful Nick Weglarz has yet to hit a home run since his promotion to triple A. In 85 at bats he has 20 hits (.235), seven doubles and a triple. Josh Tomlin pitched 6.1 innings to get the win. He holds a 6-2 record this season and a 2.81 ERA.
Double-A Akron (33-34) – The Aeros lost in 10 innings, 8-7 to Portland. Jason Kipnis has done well since his promotion, hitting his second home run in six games last night. Lonnie Chisenhall had three hits in five at bats and has looked much better since coming back from a shoulder injury. Four of his six home runs have come in the last 10 games. He is batting .302 over the stretch.
High Class-A Kinston (35-33) – starting pitcher TJ House struck out a batter an inning through his six innings of work, but walked four and allowed two runs. The Indians lost to Salem 3-2. House has struck out 65 batters in 71 innings, but his 35 walks are a bit troublesome. Designated hitter Doug Pickens was 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI. He is hitting .350 over his last 10 games (14-40).
Low Class-A Lake County (42-23) – The Captains beat Lansing 3-2. Third baseman Jeremie Tice went 2-2 with a double, home run, RBI and two walks. Second baseman Kyle Smith also hit a home run, his second of the year.
