GOODYEAR, Ariz.: Jeanmar Gomez, one of two starters competing for the final spot in the rotation, left today's game with two outs in the fourth with a leg injury.
Gomez made a dive into first base to complete a double play and injured his hip, head trainer Lonnie Soloff said.
Soloff asked Gomez to flex both legs. Gomez then threw two or three warmup pitches and faced the next batter, Chris Heisey. After throwing two balls, Gomez left the game and accompanied Soloff back to the Tribe's training complex.
After the game, manager Manny Acta said Gomez had a mild strain to his right hip but did not declare him out of the competition to earn the fifth spot in the rotation.
"""He's day to day,'' the manager said. ""It looked like had had a tough time pushing off. If he wins the fifth spot, he wouldn;t have to pitch until Halloween.''
Keven Slowey, also contending for the No, 5 spot in the rotation, pitched in a minor-league game and gave up seven runs in five innings.
