Gomez suspended five games, Hannahan, C. Perez fined

By Sheldon Ocker Published: April 18, 2012

SEATTLE:  Jeanmar Gomez was suspended for five games and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball today for hitting Mike Moustakas of the Royals last weekend in Kansas City.

Gomez plans to appeal the suspension, which means he can make his scheduled start against the Athletics on Saturday.

Moustakas was hit in the back by Gomez after KC starter Jonathan Sanchez hit Shin-Soo Choo above the knee the previous inning. The offending pitch by Gomez was widely regarded as retaliatory, though he said it was accidental.

He is the second Tribe pitcher to be suspended for hitting a batter with a pitch. Ubaldo JImenez was suspended for five games after hitting Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowsitzki in a spring training exhibition game. He served the suspension and is back in the rotation.

It is unlikely that Gomez will go through with the appeal. Because of an off day Monday, manager Manny Acta can delay his start one day, and Gomez can serve the suspension without missing a turn.

Jack Hannahan was fined $500 in connection with the Gomez throwing incident because he incited various players after the benches cleared.

Chris Perez also was fined because of this tweet he sent after the game: ""You hit us, we hit you. Period.''
