Gomez wins spot in Indians rotation
GOODYEAR, Ariz.: Sustaining a minor injury pitching in an exhbiition game Friday didn't hurt Jeanmar Gomez's chances of earning a spot as an Indians starter.
This afternoon, General Manager Chris Antonetti announced that Gomez had won the competition with Kevin Slowey for the final job in the rotation.
""Jeanmar was one of the highlights of our camp,'' Antonetti said. ""Of the guys competing for roster spots, he did all you could ask.''
Gomez made six appearances in exhibition games and posted a 1.37 earned-run average in 19 2/3 innings. He gave up only 13 hits, walked eight and struck out 14.
In the fourth inning Friday, Gomez dived into first base to complete a double play and injured his hip, forcing him to leave the game.
""He's fine,'' Antonetti said.
In a other moves, Slowey and Frank Herrmann were optioned to Columbus. Herrmann was competing for the final spot in the bullpen.
