Grady Sizemore will not play for Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
The Indians' center fielder announced Friday that a groin injury suffered about a week ago will keep him out of the tournament and off the field for an undetermined length of time.
"This was something I was looking forward to, something I wanted to do,'' Sizemore said, referring to his selection by Team USA.
Sizemore said he sustained the injury shagging fly balls in the outfield and played in the first two exhibition games to test the groin.
``I tried to get through the two games without pain and was unable to do it,'' he said.
No timetable was given for Sizemore's return, but manager Eric Wedge seemed to indicate that Sizemore probably would be ready to play when the season begins.
``Obviously, we have enough time in camp to work him back in the right direction,'' Wedge said. ``Well work off the treatment.''
