Hafner contributes from the get-go
CLEVELAND: Designated hitter Travis Hafner was activated from the disabled list after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee May 24 and got on base three times in the Indians' 12-3 win over the Angels tonight.
To make room for him on the roster, Shelley Duncan was placed on the paternity list for up to three days. Duncan left to be with his wife Elyse, who is expecting twin boys. When Duncan returns, another move will be forthcoming.
Hafner is not limited in how many games a week he can play, but manager Manny Acta said he wouldn’t push him hard.
“”He’s not necessarily going to play every day,’’ Acta said, “”but we don’t have all those indicators that would force us to play him only every other day.’’ Hafner walked twice and singled today.
In his first at-bat, he forced Ervin Santana to throw 11 pitches before walking him. Michael Brantley followed with a three-run homer.
Brantley is second on the team with 22 doubles and Acta thinks that’s just fine.
“”We never envisioned Michael as a power hitter,’’ the manager said. “”He’s a line drive guy, a doubles hitter. And we’re just glad he doesn’t try to overdo things.’’
