Hodges claimed on waivers; more Aeros roster moves
Indians minor league 1B/DH Wes Hodges was claimed by the Colorado Rockies off outright waivers Tuesday. Hodges was designated for assignment last week when Triple-A Columbus RHP Josh Tomlin was added to the 40-man roster.
Hodges, 25, was originally drafted by the Tribe in the second round of the 2006 draft out of Georgia Tech.
In other Indians minor league news, on Monday Double-A RHP Paolo Espino (9-4, 4.00 ERA) was the 15th player promoted from the Aeros to Columbus this season.
According to Aeros media relations extraordinaire Jacob Rosen, 14 Akron players earned a promotion to the Clippers in 2009, and only 13 in 2008.
With Espino gone, LHP Matt Packer joined Akron from Class-A Lake County. Packer's promotion marks the first this season for a player to move from low Class-A lake County to the Aeros.
Yet, it is a much deserved move as the 22-year old led the Midwest League with a 1.60 ERA, while racking up 92 strikeouts to just 13 walks over 95 2/3 innings. In all, Packer posted an 8-5 record with a save in 24 games (13 starts) after joining the Captains starting rotation in late May.
