Huff stops Giants but probably too late to make the club
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ.: David Huff pitched five shutut innings against the Giants Thursday night, but his impressive performance probably was too little, too late in his quest to win a job in the Indians' rotation.
Manager Manny Acta announced earlier in the day that he would reveal the identity of the pitcher who will fill the only vacant spot in the rotation. The overwhelming favorite is Josh Tomlin.
Huff yielded only three hits and one walk to San Francisco, striking out two. His problem: Coming into the game, he carried an 8.25 earned-run average.
Jeanmar Gomez, another competitor for the rotation, pitched the final four innings and allowed one run, three hits and one walk while striking out six. Gomez has had a reasonably successful spring but could use more seasoning at Triple-A.
In winning its sixth consecutive exhibition game by a 7-1 score, the Tribe hammered two home runs, a three-run blast by Chad Huffman and a solo shot by Luke Carlin. Huffman also had a run-scoring double to give him four RBI. Jack Hannahan doubled, singled and scored a run.
