Indians Take LHP Drew Pomeranz with first pick
The Indians used their first pick to select left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz with the fifth overall selection in the 2010 Draft.
The 21-year old is a 6-foot-5, 231-pounder who just concluded his junior season at the University of Mississippi, where he went 9-2 with a 2.24 ERA.
In 16 starts spanning 100 2/3 innings, he struck out 139 batters and issued 49 walks. That ranks as the third most strikeouts per inning of any NCAA Division I pitcher.
Pomeranz was also recenrtly named the Southeatern Conference Pitcher of the Year, while also being a first-team selection.
In his final start of the season this past weekend, Pomeranz earned the win after holding St. John's to two runs on seven hits over seven innings in the opening game of the NCAA Regional held at the University of Virginia. But Mississippi's season came to an end Sunday when they were eliminated by St. John's.
