Jimenez to appeal five-game suspension
GOODYEAR, Ariz.: Major League Baseball this afternoon handed down a five-game suspension and an undisclosed fine to Ubaldo Jimenez for hitting Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki with a pitch in Sunday's game at Scottsdale.
"I'm disappointed but not surprised,'' manager Manny Acta said minutes before the team left for ther airport to fly to Zebulon, N.C., to play an exhibition game Tuesday with its Class A farm team in the Carolina League.
Acta said on Sunday he didn't think Jimenez should be suspended.
""I still don't think so,'' he said. ""I'm very disappointed with the inconsistency that these decisions are made.''
Acta felt that newspaper stories outlining the simmering feud between Jimenez and Tulowitzki were instrumental in determining the punishment.
""I just think that everybody is relying too much on comments in the newspaper,'' Acta said. ""This guy walked five hitters, so where do you draw the line?''
Jimenez maintains that he did not hit Tulowitzki on purpose. Acta said the pitcher would appeal the suspension, enabling him to start Saturday against the Blue Jays. If Jimenez loses the appeal, he will miss one start.
