LaPorta axed to make room for Rogers

By Sheldon Ocker Published: June 13, 2012

CINCINNATI: Esmil Rogers is here and Matt LaPorta is not.

LaPorta was optioned back to Columbus to make room for the right-handed reliever obtained from Colorado Tuesday for cash. While he was here, LaPorta appeared in only three games and went 2-for-11.

Rogers, 26, appeared in 23 games for the Rockies and compiled an 8.06 earned-average, walking 18 and striking out 29 in 25 2/3 innings. His average fastball has been clocked at 96 miles per hour, but he doesn't always know where the ball is going, as witness 6.3 walks issued per nine innings. However, he is averaging 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings, which is where the Tribe is pinning its hopes.

Manager Manny Acta has eight pitchers in his bullpen with the latest moves. How long that will last might depend on whether Tony Sipp and Jeremy Accardo can get their acts together.
