LaPorta, Brantley and Sowers sent down
The Indians made another round of cuts today as they optioned left-handed pitcher Jeremy Sowers and catcher Wyatt Toregas to Triple A Columbus.
Right-handed pitcher Greg Aquino, first baseman Michael Aubrey, right-handed pitcher Kirk Saarloos and outfielders Michael Brantley and Matt LaPorta were reassigned to minor league camp.
The cuts leave 37 players left in camp.
Sowers was in an open competition for the fifth starter spot, but was clearly lagging behind Aaron Laffey and Scott Lewis. Lewis has pitched the best in Spring training.
Saarloos had a shot at the seventh bullpen spot, but it looks like Zach Jackson may fill that spot instead, although Vinnie Chulk has pitched well this spring.
LaPorta and Brantley may not be far off from contributing, but it was a very longshot for them to make the opening day roster. A little seasoning in the minors won't hurt.
