LaPorta sent down, Crowe recalled
Cleveland Indians outfielder Matt LaPorta has been optioned to Triple A Columbus. Taking his place on the Indians roster will be outfielder Trevor Crowe, who is being optioned from Columbus.
LaPorta appeared in 13 games for the Tribe, hitting .190 with one home run in 42 at bats. LaPorta struck out 11 times and walked four times.
Crowe, who was on the Indians opening day roster, hit .182 in 12 games (33 at bats) with the Tribe before being sent down. Crowe, a switch hitter had no home runs, 11 strikeouts and two walks. In 21 games (74 at bats) for Triple A Columbus, Crowe is hitting .230 with one home run.
LaPorta, who was first called up on May 2, was not with the Tribe for an entire month. He must have six years of service time before he is eligible for free agency, but the amount of time he spends with the major league club could determine when he is eligible for arbitration.
The Indians now have five outfielders on the roster with Ben Francisco, Grady Sizemore, Shin-Soo Choo, Dave Dellucci and Crowe. Mark DeRosa and Ryan Garko have also seen time in the outfield.
