CLEVELAND: Matt LaPorta made a mistake running the bases and paid for it two ways: He made the first out of the third inning and sprained his right ankle, forcing him to leave tonight's game, won by the Tribe 5-1 over the Pirates.
""X-rays were negative,'' manager Manny Acta saqid. ""He haqs as right ankle sprqaing and will have an MRI in the mrning,'';
Acta refused to declare LaPorta definitely out of Saturday night's game, but it would be a surprise if he played.
LaPorta led off the third inning with ground ball that bounced off the shortstop, directly to second baseman Neil Walker, who threw badly to first for a two-base error. When the next batter, Orlando Cabrera, followed with a bouncer to short, LaPorta took off for third and ws tagged out.
Rule of thumb: If the ball is hit in front of the runner at second, he should stay put.
""Sometimes the adrenalin kicks in, and they think they can do it,'' Acta said. ""But it ended up not being a very good play.''
