Marson hit in face; rookie gets first big-league hit
CHICAGO: With Travis Hafner, Asdrubal Cabrera and Carlos Santana out with injuries, the Indians were hoping to get through today's 12-6 loss to the White Sox without someone else getting hurt.
But Lou Marson was hit in the face in the fourth inning with a pitch thrown by Gavin Floyd and had to leave the game the next inning.
""He has a big gash in his mouth, but he's a tough guy,'' manager Manny Acta said.
It took three stitches in the left corner of Marson's mouth to close the wound.
""It was a curveball that didn't break,'' Marson said. ""I was waiiting for it to break and by the time I turned away, it was too late. I think I should be OK tomorrow.''
Shortstop Juan Diaz, called up from Double-A Akron, looked shaky in his big-league debut Saturday, striking out three times, commiting an error and contributing to an error charged to Casey Kotchman with an off target throw to first base.
But today he steadied himself, collecting two singles and making an above-average play in the field.
“”It’s too bad he can’t celebrate his first hit the way he would want,’’ Acta said, referring to the fact the Indians lost the game. “”But I hope he feels good about himself.’’
