"Nasty" Tom Mastny back in fold

By sstorm Published: March 1, 2010

OK, so this doesn't leave a lot to cheer about, but at least it adds much-needed pitching depth:

The Indians signed a familar face Monday afternoon in right-handed pitcher Tom Mastny. He was signed to a minor league free-agent deal and is expected to report to Early Spring Training minor league camp Tuesday.

The 29-year old returns to Cleveland after spending the 2009 season in Japan pitching for the Yokohama Bay Stars. He went 1-5 with a 5.69ERA (61.2IP/39ER) in 15 games for the Bay Stars.

Before Japan, Mastny spent the previous four seasons in the Indians system, appearing in a career-high 51 games for Cleveland during the 2007 season when he went 7-2 with a 4.68 ERA.

In all, Mastny has made 80 major-league appearances (including one start with the Tribe), going 9-5 with five saves and 6.13 ERA. He was originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 11th round of the 2003 amateur draft out of Furman University.
