Not much room in Tribe rotation
GOODYEAR, Ariz.: The Indians' first official workout of the spring was today, but even at this early date, only one vacancy remains in the rotation.
""We're in a lot better position than we were last year,'' manager Manny Acta said. ""We have Fausto, Masterson, (Mitch) Talbot, (Carlos) Carrasco and a battle for the fifth spot.'' [ep
That competition will involve Josh Tomlin, Jeanmar Gomez, David Huff, Anthony Reyes and possibly the club's top draft choice in 2009, Alex White. [ep
Carmona will be the ace of the staff after posting a 13-14 record and 3.77 earned-run average. Masterson struggled through most of the schedule but pitched well in his last five starts.
""In the second half of the season, things clicked for him,'' Acta said. ""It took awhile for him to get it together, but I think he can have a breakout year for us.''
After a horrid big-league debut late in 2009, Carrasco was summoned from Triple-A last Sept. 1 and posted a 2-2 record and 3.83 ERA in seven starts, demonstrating a live arm and much more savvy on the mound. Talbot had a good first half but faded in the second half, posting a 2-7 record and 5.23 ERA from July 2 through the end of the season.
