GOODYEAR, Ariz.: The Indians reduced their spring roster by eight this morning, leaving 38 players in major-league camp.
More important, manager Manny Acta said on Monday that after the next cut, he would begin piecing together the uncertain areas of the team: rotation, bullpen, utility players.
But today, right hander Jess Todd was optioned to Columbus, and lefty Mike Gosling, righties Frank Herrmann, Josh Judy and Yohan Pino, plus catcher Damaso Espino, infielder Brian Bixler and outfielder Shelley Duncan were dispatched to the minor-league camp for reasignment later.
Only 16 viable pitchers remain in camp (Kerry Wood is out for at least six weeks). Unless Jeremy Sowers (sore shoulder) isn't ready to start the season on time, it appears that only Hector Ambriz, Jamey Wright, Saul Rivera and Carlos Carrasco will fail to make the team.
Twenty-one position players have made it this far, including Russell Branyan, who has yet to play a game because of a herniated disc.
