Rondon recovering from Tommy John surgery
The Indians reported Thursday afternoon that minor league pitching prospect Hector Rondon underwent "Tommy John" elbow ligament replacement surgery Wednesday in Alabama, performed by the famed Dr. James Andrews.
Rondon, who signed with the Indians as a minor league free agent in 2004 out of Venezuela, entered the season ranked by Baseball America as the Tribe's seventh-best prospect after splitting the 2009 season between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus.
But the 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-hander pitched in just seven games this season - all with the Clippers - before being shut down after a May 12th start.
Over that short span it was obvious something was wrong as Rondon, as he went 1-3 with a gaudy 8.53 ERA that included giving up 12 home runs in just 31 2/3 innings.
After a little over three months of rest with little progress, Rondon underwent surgery. Typical recovery is estimated at about one year, meaning Rondon is likely to miss the 2011 season.
