Seven invited to major league camp

The Cleveland Indians invited seven minor league players Major league Camp, including its first round draft picks in each of the last three years.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Indians today invited seven (7) players to Major League camp from their player development system, bringing the total number of non-roster spring invitees to sixteen (16) for the 2010 Spring Training camp in Goodyear, Arizona.


Finished 2009 with AAA Columbus and was converted to a reliever for the first time in his career, carrying a 2.53ERA over his last 35 appearances (57.0IP, 62H, 16ER, 11BB, 41K, 2HR) from June 1 thru the end of the season…Combined on the year he was 4-4 w/a 2.95ERA in 49 games/5GS (106.2IP, 110H, 35ER, 7HR, 18BB, 62K)… Began the year at AA Akron where he was 2-1 w/a 2.93ERA in 5 starts (30.2IP, 27H, 10ER, 12K, .243avg)…Worked at least 6.0IP in 4 of the 5 starts.

PINO, Yohan, RHP

Acquired towards the end of the 2009 campaign from the Twins to complete the Carl Pavano trade…On the year was a combined 9-3 w/a 2.83ERA in 42 games/14GS (127.0IP, 110H, 40ER, 29BB, 122K) between three different stops in the Twins and Indians organizations…At Triple-A he was 4-2 w/a 2.49ERA in 10 starts (65.0IP, 49H, 18ER, 13BB, 58K, .95whip)…Was 3-3 w/a 3.65 ERA in 14 games for Aragua in the Venezuelan Winter League after the season (12GS, 56.2IP, 64H, 23ER, 40K).


Selected by Cleveland in the first round (15th overall pick) of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft…Pitched in the Arizona Fall Instructional League in Goodyear…Was named as the No. 5 prospect from the lower tiers of baseball or entry level by the editors of Minor League News (MLN Sports)…Went 8-4 with a 3.87 ERA (107.0IP, 93H, 49R/46ER, 44BB, 121K, .233 avg) in 16 starts as a junior at the University of North Carolina…Following the season he was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference first team for the second consecutive season…Prior to the draft, White was ranked as the 6th best prospect (4th best pitcher) in the entire 2009 draft by Baseball America.

ESPINO, Damaso, CA

Spent the first two months of the season at AA Akron and was promoted to AAA Columbus on May 31…Homered in consecutive games for Columbus, August 1-4…Struck out just 15 times in 192 plate appearances at Triple-A…Played in one game for Panama in the WBC…Signed by Cleveland to a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to Major League spring training camp in November 2008.


Selected in the first round (29th overall pick) of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft by Cleveland…Split the season between A Kinston and AA Akron where he hit .258 (124-481) with 31 2B, 22HR and 92 RBI in 123 games…Hit .467 (14-30) in the Eastern League playoffs with 2 2B, 2RBI and 7R in 7G with a .500OBP for the EL champs…Was second among organizational hitters in HR and third in RBI…Was a mid-season and post-season all-star selection in the Carolina League and after the season was tabbed as the fifth best overall prospect in the CL by Baseball America…Was named the second best prospect in the Indians organization by Baseball Prospectus after the season


Selected by Cleveland in the 1st round (13th overall) of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft…Spent entire season at AA Akron where he was a mid-season all-star selection and finished 7th in the league with 83 RBI (4th most in the system)…His 33 doubles were tied for 4th in the Eastern League…Hit .284 (50-176) in the second half with 12 2B, 7HR and 36RBI…Finished the regular season with a 10-game hitting streak (15-41, .366, 4 2B, 10RBI)…After the season played in the Arizona Parallel League.


Split the 2009 campaign between AAA Columbus and AA Akron where he hit .240 (88-367) with 14 2B, 3B, HR, 35RBI and 47R in 115 combined games between the two levels…With the Clippers, he hit .252 (64-252) in 81 games with 27RBI and 34R, including going 9-for-26 (.346) with 9R in his last eight games…He appeared in games at all four infield positions (58G-SS, 8G-3B, 8G-2B, 7G-1B) and had a fielding % of .956 (14E/320 chances) for the Clippers…Contract was purchased from Columbus on Sept. 8 and made his MLB debut the next night vs. Texas (G2 of DH) as a pinch-hitter…Collected first MLB hit on Sept. 12 vs. KC (Yabuta).
