Strength coach leaving Tribe
Indians strength and conditioning coach Tim Maxey ia leaving to take the newly-created position of strength and conditioning coordinator for Major League Baseball and the Major League Players Association. ¶
In his new job, Maxey will counsel players and their teams on matters concerning conditioning, fitness, nutrition and related issues. ¶
Maxey, who has been chief of the Tribe's strength and conditioning program for seven years, will visit each big-league club in spring training. He already has served on MLB's strength and conditioning advisory board. He also has been an advisor to the Taylor Hooten Foundation, which educates youngsters on the dangers of performance enhancing drugs. ¶
Before coming to Cleveland, Maxey worked with the Royals organization from 1998-2002. ¶
Maxey graduated from Shawnee State University and earned a masters degree from Ohio State. ¶
In other Indians news, Jake Westbrook completed his stint in the Puerto Rican winter league and reported no pain in his right elbow, which was reconstructed 1 1/2 years ago. In four outings, Westbrook allowed five earned runs and 15 hits in 12 1/3 innings. In his final appearance Tuesday night, he pitched four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks. ¶
