Talbot on DL; Carrera called up, Gomez next
CLEVELAND: There was no indication that anything physcial was bothering Mitch Talbot when he started last Friday or in the succeeding few days, but today he was placed on the 15-day disabled liast with lower back strain.
Talbot's entry to the DL is retroactive to last Saturday, which means he can return to the rotation on July 24, but is that what the Indians want? Talbot has been struggling for several weeks as the weakest link among the starters (even weaker than Fausto Carmona, who is expected to come off the DL Monday against the Twins). For the season, Talbot is 2-6 with a 6.33 earned-run average in 11 starts. In his last outing, Talbot gave up eight runs and 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings against Toronto.
For now, outfielder Ezequiel Carrera will take Talbot'a place on the roster. Carrera is batting .288 with eight doubles, three triples, two home runs and 25 RBI at Columbus. He has scored 63 runs and stolen 35 bases in 39 attempts.
When Talbot's turn to start next comes up, on Sunday against the Orioles, the plan is to call up Jeanmar Gomez from Triple-A.
