Tejera roughed up in debut; Aeros lose 11-7 to Reading

By sstorm Published: July 7, 2009

KEY STATS - The Aeros managed 15 hits against Reading but turned those promising hits into just five runs through eight innings after hitting into five double plays and leaving the bases loaded in the fifth inning...The Aeros defense has left a lot to be desired the last two days as four errors Tuesday came on the heels of three miscues Monday.

KEY MOMENTS - Reading scored eight runs in the first five innings - all against Aeros new starting pitcher Michael Tejera on nine hits and five walks.

"I don't think he'd pitched in a couple weeks," Aeros manager Mike Sarbaugh said of the team's team's newest member. "So for sitting that long I thought he went out and did Ok. He looks like he knows how to pitch, he mixed his pitches up and a couple plays behind might have made a little difference. But that's baseball."

While it wasn't the start Tejera would have liked to have had in his debut, it is far from the toughest thing he's ever experienced in baseball. Originally from Havana, Cuba, Tejera defected with another Cuban player as a teenager in 1994.[ep

Once he established residency, he was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the sixth round of the 1995 draft. He made his major league debut with Florida four years later and stayed with the organization through 2003.

STORM'S STARS - Left fielders ruled the day as Reading's Michael Taylor went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three stolen bases while Akron's Nick Weglarz went 2-for-3 with with two runs scored, two RBI and a ninth-inning two-run home run.

NOTES - With Aeros ace Hector Rondon having been promoted to Triple-A Columbus, Aeros right-hander Mariano Gomez was added to the Eastern League All-Star Southern Division in Rondon's place. The game will be played July 15 at Trenton's Waterfront Park.

UP NEXT - Akron and visiting Reading (Philadelphia Phillies) meet for the second game of this short three-game series tonight at Canal Park at 7:05 p.m. Aeros right-hander Josh Tomlin (8-5, 4.09 ERA) and Reading right-hander Mike Stutes (5-4, 4.46 ERA) are the scheduled starters.
