Tribe makes roster moves, including moving Tomlin to DL

By Sheldon Ocker Published: May 12, 2012

BOSTON: Josh Tomlin was scratched from tonight's start agsinst the Red Sox with soreness in his right wrist and placed on the 15-day disabled list.

No detailed diagnosis or explanation of how the injury was sustained is yet available, but Zach McAllister was called up from Columbus to take Tomlin's start and presumably whatever starts he will miss while he's on the DL .

McAllister was summoned to start the first game of last Monday's makeup doubleheader against the White Sox and gave up four runs (two earned) and six hits in six innings to earn his first major-league win. He returned to Triple-A the next day, but did not get another start for the Clippers, because today is his day to pitch.

At Columbus, McAllister was 3-1 with a 2.83 earned-run average in six starts.

In other moves, Jason Donald was optioned to Columbus and Jose Lopez promoted to the Tribe. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, outfielder Nick Weglarz was designated for assignment.

If Weglarz clears waivers, he can be reassigned to Triple-A. If he is claimed by another team, the Indians will lose him.

Donald was batting .178 with no extra-base hits, one walk and 16 strikeouts in 45 at-bats. He has been thre Tribe's all-purpose utility player, who can step in at short, third, second and in left field.

Lopez batted .522 in 23 aet-bats with the Clippers. He started the year with Cleveland and  batted .190 (4-for-21). He can play third and second, but defense is not his strength.
