The Indians have invited C Chun Chen to be a non-roster invitee to Major League camp.
In just Chen's third professional season, he batted a combined .315 (123-for-390) with 58 runs scored, 38 doubles, three triples, 12 home runs and 69 RBI in 110 games between low Class-A Lake County and High Class-A Kinston.
His doubles led all Indians farmhands and his .315 combined average was second-best in the system. He also appeared in the XM All-Star Futures Game in Anaheim, CA.
The Taiwan native began his season at Lake County (where he became a Midwest League All-Star) batting .312 (68-for-218) with 21 doubles, three triples and 39 RBI before being promoted to Kinston on July 2. At the time of his promotion to Kinston, Chen ranked among the Top 10 in the Midwest League in both average and slugging percentage.
Chen picked up where he left off at Lake County, batting .320 (55-for-172) with 31 runs scored, 17 doubles, six home runs, 30 RBI and an OPS of .966 in 52 games at Kinston. His .966 OPS and .442 on-base percentage would have led the Carolina
League, but he did not have enough at-bats to qualify. Chen was named the 22nd best prospect in the Indians system entering 2011 by Baseball America.
