Tribe's top relievers in danger of being overworked?
CLEVELAND: It was left up to Vinnie Pestano and Chris Perez to close out the Indians' 4-2 win over the Rangers Sunday.
Manager Manny Ac\ta would add, ""again'' to that sentence.
After Ubaldo Jimenez delivered seven scoreless innings, Tony Sipp was called on to protect a 4-0 lead in the eighth. Instead, he gave up two runs and three hits and retired only two batters.
Pestano hurried in and struck out the last batter of the eighth, and Perez wrapped up his 11th save of the year in the ninth.
“”We can’t be bringing in our main guys all the time, when we have a four- or three-run lead,’’ Acta said.
But even though Perez has pitched in four of the past five games, he's ready to keep going in Monday's makeup doubleheader aagainst the White Sox.
""I'll take the ball every day,’’ he said. “”I can rest in the off season.’’
That’s a noble attitude, but it’s not going to happen when there’s a manager whose job it is to protect his valuable arms.
“”Look at Vinnie,’’ Perez said. “”He’s pitched four out of the last five days. Why should I be any different, just because I’m the closer?’’
Actually, Pestano has pitched three days in a row and in five of the past seven games.
