By sstorm Published: July 31, 2010

What the rebuilding Indians got out of the swap is minor-league RHP Corey Klubber from the Padres. The 24-year old Double-A pitcher was 6-6 with a 3.45 ERA at San Antonio in 22 games (21 starts).

Wood activated; Hafner still out

By Sheldon Published: July 31, 2010

TORONTO: Kerry Wood was activated from the disabled list this morning after sitting out more than two weeks with a blister on the index finger of his right hand.

His return gives the Indians eight relievers for the time being but not for long. Justin Germano, who was called up from Columbus on Friday to help strengthen the overworked relief corps, probably will be returned to Triple-A when outfielder Michael Brantley is eligible to be called up next Saturday.

Talbot goes on DL; two pitchers called up

By Sheldon Published: July 30, 2010

TORONTO: The Indians moved to shore up their tired bullpen in the wake of a two-night ordeal in which the relief corps was pressed into service for more than 13 innings.

Part of the reason for the overload of work was an injury to Mitch Talbot Thursday night, when he was forced to leave the game with no outs in the third inning with a strained back.

5 Questions with Atkins & guest appearance from Shapiro

By sstorm Published: July 28, 2010

This edition of Five Questions with Ross Atkins was done via phone. Make sure you read through untill the end where there's a surprise visit from Indians general manager Mark Shapiro.

Q) Please share your thoughts on the conversion of RHP Connor Graham from a starting pitcher to a reliever. Continuing his struggles from last season as a starter, Graham went 1-2 with a 6.16 ERA to start the season in the Akron's starting rotation. But in his 23 appearances since joining the Aeros bullpen, Graham is 1-3 with a save and 2.50 ERA. What is it about him that allows his stuff to play so much better out of the bullpen?

Peralta dealt; Valbuena back

By Sheldon Published: July 28, 2010

CLEVELAND: With Brandon Inge out with an injury, the Tigers are looking for a third baseman. Now they have one: Jhonny Peralta.

The Indians dealt Peralta and cash to Detroit for minor-league left-hander Giovanni Soto. To fill the roster spot vacated by Peralta, Cleveland recalled middle infielder Luis Valbuena from Columbus.

The trade occured about an hour before tonight's game with the Yankees. Peralta already was in the lineup, but his place at third was taken by Andy Marte after the deal was consummated.

Peralta, 28, has been in the Tribe organization his entire career. Currently, he is batting .246 with 23 doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 43 RBI in 91 games. His most productive season was 2008, when he batted .276 with 23 homers and 89 RBI, but last year his production began to fall, as he batted .254 with 11 home runs and 83 RBI.

The guaranteed portion of his contract, worth $4.6 million, expires this year. He is still owed about $1.7 million for the remainder of the season, but the Tribe probably is paying all or part of it. He has a club option for $7 million for 2011.

Wood's blister affect potential trade?

By Sheldon Published: July 17, 2010

CLEVELAND: A blister on the index finger of Kerry Wood's pitching hand has landed him on the disabled list, retroactive to last Monday.
Wood hasn't pitched since last Sunday, so it seems odd that a blister wouldn't heal in the interim. At any rate, Wood will not be eligible to come off the DL until July 28, three days before the trading deadline.

It's no secret that the Indians want to trade their closer, but being on the DL would appear to make that possibility all the more daunting, especially given the fact that he blew a 5-5 tie in his last appearance against the Rays at Tampa Bay and has saved only eight games.

Tribe gets younger with latest move

By Sheldon Published: July 10, 2010

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.: It's no coincidence that the Indians lopped 12 years off their roster by calling up Chris Gimenez from Columbus and designating Mike Redmond for assignment.
Gimenez, 27, was last year's do-everything utility player for the Tribe, playing left, right, first base and especially catcher. His problem: a 144 batting average in 111 at-bats.

Redmond, 39, was signed over the winter to bring in a veteran presence to help the pitching staff and assist rookie Lou Marson, who was the everyday catcher until phenom Carlos Santana was called up from Triple-A last month. Initially, Redmond was Fausto Carmona's personal catcher, club officials thinking that Carmona needed a guiding hand after two brutal seasons in which controlling his emotions on the mound became an issue.

Now that Carmona has proven he can do it without Redmond (Santana has been catching him), it was time to give Gimenez another chance.

News is good for Choo, LaPorta

By Sheldon Published: July 6, 2010

ARLINGTON, Texas: The Indians might have gotten lucky, if the preliminary medical reports on Shin-Soo Choo and Matt LaPorta stand up.

After visiting the Cleveland Clinic Tuesday, noted hand specialist Dr. Tom Graham recommended that Choo keep his sprained left thumb in a splint for the next seven to 10 days rather than go directly to the operating room. That does not mean Choo absolutely won't have to repair the thumb surgically, but Graham thinks there is a reasonable chance it will heal on its own.

5 Questions with Ross Atkins

By sstorm Published: July 2, 2010

In another installment of 5 questions with Indians farm director Ross Atkins, we talk about a handful of prospects in the Tribe organization - from two new players obtained in a trade to current Tribe first baseman Matt LaPorta.

Q) Can you give us a little background on RHP Cory Burns, who is tied for the second most saves in all of the minor leagues this season with 23 saves (between high Class-A Kinston and low Class-A Lake County)? Even more impressive is the fact that Burns is a perfect 23-for-23 in save opportunities with a 2.15 ERA through 28 appearances. The Indians don't usually "groom" closers. Is Burns an exception?
