Weglarz's second HR in as many days not enough as Trenton tops Aeros 7-6

By sstorm Published: June 24, 2009

TRENTON THUNDER 7, AKRON AEROS 6

KEY STATS: The Aeros committed a season-high four errors, including two in the Thunder's five-run fifth inning...Aeros closer Vinnie Pestano blown save came on the first run he'd allowed since June 1, as he'd gone eight consecutive appearances with 8 1/3 scoreless innings.

KEY MOMENTS: With the Aeros trailing 5-2 entering the seventh inning, Nick Weglarz and Carlos Santana hit back-to-back home runs to give the host a temporary lead. Weglarz's blast to right field was a two-run shot while Santana's to left was a solo shot...But the lead didn't last long as Zach Putnam gave up a homer to the second batter he faced in Edwar Gonzalez to knot the game at 6-6...Trenton won the game in the ninth inning on Jorge Vazquez's home run off Aeros closer Vinnie Pestano.

STORM'S STAR: For the second consecutive game, the honors got to Weglarz, who went 4-for-5 with a two-run home run and three RBI. He also gave Akron a shot in the ninth with a two-out single, but was stranded when Santana struck out to end the game.

CABRERA UPDATE: In his second rehab start with the Aeros, Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera went 1-for-5 with a double. Although he made a throwing error in the first inning, he also showed major-league range on a nice play for the second out of the second inning.

On Edwar Gonzalez's liner back up the middle, Cabrera instinctually ranged far to his left to snag the ball in shallow center field and fired to first in time to nab Gonzalez by a step.

"Asdrubal's made some real nice plays at short," Aeros manager Mike Sarbaugh said.

UP NEXT: The Aeros wrap up this three-game series against Trenton (New York Yankees) this afternoon at noon at Canal Park at 12:05 p.m. Aeros left-hander Ryan Edell (2-0, 2.28 ERA) and Thunder right-hander Kanekoa Texeira (5-4, 3.45 ERA) are the scheduled pitchers.
