CLEVELAND: It appears that Kerry Wood will head to Akron for a brief rehabilitation assignment some time this week.
""He threw a bullpen yesterday and felt great,'' manager Manny Acta said this afternoon. ""Some time today, we'll put together a plan for a rehab assignment, and he could go next week. It looks like it could be Akron.''
Acta said that Wood would need to make more than one appearance before he is activated from the disabled list. But two outings might be sufficient.
Wood has been on the DL since spring trasining with a strained lat muscle. In his absence, Chris Perez has been the Tribe's closer.
Tommy John surgery has a way of taking a pitcher out of the spotlight. And so it's been with Anthony Reyes, who underwent elbow reconstruction surgery last June. Reyes isn't expected to be activated until after the All-Star Game, but he has begun to throw bullpens every Monday and Friday at the Tribe's spring training complex in Goodyear, Ariz. At this point in his recovery program, Reyes is throwing fastballs exclusively.
It hasn't shown up in the win column, but in the three games leading up to Saturday night's encounter with the Twins, the Indians were batting .352 with nine doubles, one home run and 15 runs, nine in one game.
